Pont d'Eyheraberry over the River Nive
The starting point of our pilgrimage is the Roman bridge over the River Nive.
Porte Notre Dame
Medieval clock tower at the end of the Porte Notre Dame. Coincidently we later meet and become friends with the Phillip and Rob, seen here walking up the street.
Jamon & Cheese Board
Jamon and cheese become our daily fix while walking The Way!
Pilgrims Menu
Pilgrims Menus are a tasty and affordable way to refuel along the Camino. They nearly all include three courses, with wine or water for €10-12€.
View from the Citadelle
Beautiful sunset view over the old town, with the mighty Pyrenees in the distance.
Decorative arch at Notre Dame du Bout du Pont
Entering the ‘Church of Our Lady at the End of the Bridge’ where pilgrims have for generations gone to light a candle for their journey
Doorway Inscription
Almost every house in St Jean Pied de Port has inscriptions above doorways. During the Basque Renaissance in the 1900’s these signs were used as the basis for Basque typography.
Hiking boots
Sadly Donna’s trusty Scarpa’s circa 1980’s have been superseded by new materials and technology! Good footwear is essential, along with a few packs of Compede.
Pilgrims passport
We pick up up our pilgrims passports and are ready to begin our journey. The passport identifies you as a pilgrim, and by collecting stamps along the way, provides proof that you have walked, cycled or ridden on horseback the journey to Santiago de Compostela.
