Camino Day 35: Portomarin to Palais de Rei

Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost.

Day 35: 28 kms - 37,253 steps

Today was a lot better in terms of pilgrim clusters.  Things seem to have thinned out already with pilgrims starting out from various hostels and hotels along the route.  The walking was pretty, country lanes, pockets of forest and farmland stretching out around us. Only a few days to go and I am OK with that. I miss Ben, Max and Emma. I’m tired of being without them.

Our Hotel Caso Blanco is a gorgeous country property with only 6 rooms, a short drive from The Way.  Phillip & Rob are staying here too.  It’s our last night in the same accommodation. The proprietor at the hotel recommended we take the bicycles for a ride to the local castle – just a few kilometres away. I was keen to go and Philip, ever the gentleman, offered to come with me.  The country lanes were spectacular, in the late afternoon with dappled light and fields of livestock, the area had a distinct English feel – and yes – there was a huge stone castle on the hill.  We had assumed it would be an unassuming ruin but no – entry was 3 Euro and alas, neither of us had thought to bring money.  We poked about and tried to talk our way in but to no avail.  Our only option was to get back on our bikes for the ride home.

This evening we had an amazing meal – the local cheeses were sublime.  We ate and drank too much!!  Despite all the food and wine, I am still losing weight, my hiking pants need a belt!
