Camino Day 37: Aruza to Pedrouzo

Count your blessings - not your troubles.

Day 37: 26.4 kms - 38,120 steps

We decide to leave early this morning, and without breakfast which the hotel didn’t offer until 8.30am – crazy late.  We were worried about the heat and although it was hot, we arrived just before it rained so really we were very lucky.

Walking today was again through farmland and forest. I will be ready to arrive in Santiago tomorrow.  The crush of pilgrims is making the walking less desirable, not so much fun.  Today at our morning break we had just ordered coffee and were sitting in a busy but tranquil way-side café when a large group of pilgrims arrived.   They took over the space, holding hands in a circle and singing, which was fine, but then pulled out a ghetto blaster, pumped up the volume and started dancing around. We couldn’t just walk on as our drinks had just arrived.  I felt old and grumpy but I just wanted a little peace and quiet – I’d rather not participate in that circus, or have it thrust onto me. These pilgrims are making me grumpy.

After we arrived in our hotel, we went out for a meal and found a fabulous local produce store. We sat at the large communal table with a vibrant group of Filipino pilgrims. Drinking craft beer and munching on our meal, we discovered they had just started the pilgrimage in Sarria. They are bussed in and out daily from their hotel over 45 mins away!!  How lucky we are to have booked with Raw Travel, most of our accommodation is on The Way, or close by – usually no more than a 5 min transfer.

We have had the most incredible time, although I am ready to go home, my biggest regret is not having shared this experience with Ben.
