Ancient Santorini village offers spectacular Easter Friday celebrations

Celebrating Greek Easter on Santorini is one of the most enjoyable community events of the year.

Greek Orthodox Easter is in April or May every year, and because it’s a popular time to visit Santorini, it is best to book accommodation early - the villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori are highly recommended.

The village of “Pyrgos Kallistis” (it’s full name which means ‘the most beautiful tower’) is one of five castle cities on the island and was the capital of Santorini for centuries.

It offers breathtaking views of the whole island and a walk through the streets will take you back to another era.

The village’s Easter Friday night, one of the most celebrated local customs, is truly spectacular.

The villagers prepare for the entire Easter weekend by lighting up thousands of fire torches, and aluminum cans full of long lasting flammable materials, placing them on every church, every house, every rooftop, along every pathway in the entire village, and on the Venetian castle, creating an unforgettable scene.

Approaching the village from below is so spectacular that people from all over Santorini come to witness the spectacular lights.

It’s a perfect start to the rest of the traditional four day long Greek Easter celebrations being echoed throughout Greece.
