Camino Day 15: Burgos to Hornillos
Day 15: 21.2 kilometres - 32,932 steps
Sylvies first day of walking the Camino.
We enter the Meseta. It’s not what I was expecting. I had expected long flat and boring. That is the reputation of The Meseta. But not at all, instead it is lush, green and peaceful. Gentle undulating fields with stony, rocky patches and big, endless blue sky. Donna surprised me by saying this was her favourite part.
Its flat easy walking today - only 20kms. We stay overnight in town off The Way (taxi collection from the small town to the hotel in Isar). Isar is like a ghost town, very atmospheric with crumbling ancient buildings, but we see no-one. At the top of the hill is small church, all locked up and protected by an infestation of bees - we daren’t get too close.
Luckily our hotel has a bar and a lovely quiet garden with shady trees and a cool breeze.
We are falling in with a regular crowd, the two Melbourne boys, three British guys and tonight a newbie… British/American writer Matt. We are all in the same hotel, and sit in the shade discussing everything from pilgrim gossip (who hooked up with who? really?) to world politics and our own hopes and dreams.
The bartender introduced us to a local Spanish Gin - Nordes. It’s our new favourite and we decide the official drink of our Camino! Gin and tonic in the garden - lots of laughs. An awesome dinner with new friends.
A great first day for Sylvie.
