A day exploring the Island of the world’s longest living people
Photograph by Christian Burri
The Greek Island of Ikaria lies about 30 miles off the western coast of Turkey. It’s known mainly for two things - its rugged beauty of jagged ridges of scrub-covered mountains rising steeply out of the Aegean Sea, and the longevity of the locals' lives. It has one of the highest rates of centurions per head of population in the world.
You can experience a one day tour giving you insight to why the people of Ikaria live so long. Hike into the famous Chalaris Canyon where with your guide you will explore the natural herbs the locals use in their daily cooking and natural remedies. Enjoy breathtaking views while enjoying a picnic with local Ikarian delicacies before hiking to the Afianes Winery for a tour and a sampling of the wines enjoyed daily by the locals. End your day with a typical multi-course Ikaria family style lunch or dinner while learning more about the lives and traditions of Ikaria’s centurions.
